Viktor Gyökeres was included in Arsenal's starting lineup when the team visited Newcastle at St James Park on Sunday. National team colleagues Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth, on the other hand, had to start on the bench for Newcastle.
The biggest discussion in the first half came when Gyökeres was played free against Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal. The Swede fell in the duel and called for a penalty – something the referee initially agreed with.
The referee pointed to the penalty spot, but after consulting VAR and reviewing the replay himself on the sidelines, he changed his decision.
Arsenal's players reacted strongly to the referee's decision and coach Mikel Arteta marked his frustration ironically by laughing and applauding on the sidelines.
Shortly afterwards, it was Newcastle who broke the deadlock through the German Nick Woltemade.
The second half ebbed and flowed without creating particularly hot scoring chances. It wasn't until the 84th minute that Arsenal were able to equalize through the Spaniard Mikel Merino.
In the 96th minute of the match, Arsenal would also complete the turnaround, through the Brazilian Gabriel who headed in a corner.
The win takes Arsenal up to second place in the Premier League table. Newcastle is in thirteenth place.
