The EU's climate service Copernicus notes that April had a global average of 14.96 degrees Celsius. This is 0.6 degrees warmer than the average of 1991-2020, and 1.51 degrees warmer than the average in pre-industrial times (1850-1900).
The average temperature was 0.07 degrees lower than last year's record level, and as much warmer than the third warmest April month measured in 2016, writes Copernicus in a press release.
During 21 of the last 22 months, the temperature has been more than 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial level.
It was primarily eastern Russia that experienced higher temperatures than normal, as well as parts of Antarctica and an area northeast of the Arabian Peninsula.
