With an imminent risk that the expected tariffs from US President Donald Trump would increase costs, Apple wanted to ensure that there were sufficient iPhones in stock for the at least crucial American market.
Therefore, Apple increased production in India – and quite significantly. The main suppliers Foxconn and Tata exported iPhones worth 2 billion dollars – equivalent to 20 billion kronor – to the US in March. A record, according to Reuters.
Only Foxconn accounted for around 1.3 of these billion – which was roughly as much as the supplier's export of iPhones was in January and February combined.
Apple booked at least six cargo planes to transport the smart phones from India to the US – which a source simply describes as a way to "avoid the tariff".
In early April, Donald Trump then announced that all goods exported from India to the US would be subject to a 27 percent tariff.
