Donald Trump demolished the East Wing of the White House in the fall of 2025 to make room for the costly ballroom.

Since then, the project has been embroiled in legal proceedings because it lacks authorisation from Congress. The court behind Friday's decision emphasises that it is not stopping the construction, only that approval is required.

Trump lashed out at “the terrible decision” in a long post on his Truth Social platform, where he claims that the ballroom is being built “to protect our country” and that it costs taxpayers nothing. According to American media, construction is estimated to cost around 6 billion kronor, half of which, according to USA Today, is being financed by tax money.
