Two-time Olympic gold medalist Michelle Gisin can move her arms and legs normally after a serious crash in downhill training in St. Moritz, the Swiss national team said. The 32-year-old is in “stable condition” and is undergoing surgery in Zurich, Switzerland.

The accident occurred during a training run ahead of the two World Cup downhill races on Friday and Saturday in the Swiss ski resort. The 32-year-old Gisin, who won Olympic gold in the combined in both 2018 and 2022, lost control and crashed into the safety nets.

She received medical treatment on the slope before being carried on a stretcher to a helicopter for further travel to the hospital. Gisin is undergoing surgery in Zurich and the Swiss national team states that she “can move her arms and legs normally”, but that she has injuries to her right wrist and left knee.

The Swiss women's national team has been plagued by bad luck lately. Michelle Gisin is the third reigning Olympic champion to crash in training in the past month alone.

Previously, both Lara Gut-Behrami and Corinne Suter – Olympic gold medalists in super-G and downhill respectively in 2022 – have experienced similar mishaps.

Gut-Behrami is already out of the Olympics after tearing her cruciate ligament in training at Copper Mountain, Colorado. Suter, who also crashed in St. Moritz last month, has been out of skiing for about a month after suffering calf, knee and foot injuries.
