Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson writes on X:
"Elinor Hammarskjöld was nominated by the Swedish government earlier this year and will take up her new role shortly. I want to wish Elinor a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and good luck in her important task."
She was appointed by Secretary-General António Guterres.
Hammarskjöld has previously, among other things, been Sweden's ambassador to Israel, head of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' unit for international law, human rights, and treaty law, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' personnel manager. She has also worked at the UN representation in New York and at Sweden's general consulate in Jerusalem, according to a government press release.
"I am honored to have received this trust. I look forward to contributing to the UN's important role in the legal area", says Elinor Hammarskjöld according to the text.
Hammarskjöld is a distant relative of Dag Hammarskjöld, the UN Secretary-General between 1953 and 1961.
