Ankara court orders Turkish opposition to change leader

The court questions the legitimacy of the process that brought Özgür Özel to the party leadership position after his victory over the previous leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

The verdict requires Kilicdaroglu to be reinstated.

The CHP won a landslide victory over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP party in the 2024 local elections. Since then, a series of legal proceedings have been initiated against the party and its leadership.

Many CHP representatives are in custody after being accused of corruption, among other things. The most famous is Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, seen as Erdogan's main political rival and a serious potential contender in the next presidential election.
