A major lawsuit against the Turkish opposition has been rejected by a court in Ankara. Cheers erupted in the courtroom, reports the news agency AFP's correspondent.

The allegations against the opposition party CHP concerned alleged vote-buying during the party's congress in 2023. The case has been seen by the outside world as politically motivated and a part of the Erdogan regime's pursuit of opponents.

CHP's party leader Özgür Özel is a strong voice against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rule, and if the court had ruled against CHP, Özel could have lost his post.

But the judge now announces that the case "lacks grounds".

Many CHP representatives are already detained after being accused of, among other things, corruption. The most well-known is Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, seen as Erdogan's main political rival and a strong potential challenger in the next presidential election.
