Mullally has previously been a bishop in London. Now she is facing a number of tricky cases, such as the division within the church regarding whether bishops should continue to bless same-sex couples and the handling of previous abuse scandals.
As Archbishop, I commit to continuing to listen to survivors, care for the vulnerable and promote a culture of safety and well-being for all, she said according to AFP when she took office.
The 63-year-old replaces Justin Welby who in November last year was forced to resign in the light of an abuse scandal. Welby, who preached at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and crowned King Charles III, was pointed out in an investigation which showed that he and the church had not informed the police about known physical and sexual abuse that had been going on mainly during the 1970s and 80s.
The Archbishop of Canterbury leads the Anglican church community which includes the Church of England and its daughter churches in former colonies. The Anglican Church is the state church in the United Kingdom and has been led by 105 men before Sarah Mullally.
