Italian football is shaken by a deep crisis after the men's national team was eliminated by Bosnia-Herzegovina, ranked 66th in the world, in the World Cup qualifying playoff.
The loss, after penalties, means Italy misses out on their third World Cup in a row.
The fiasco also sees federation president Gabriele Gravina and national team manager Gianluigi Buffon leave their roles. Their decisions will likely also lead to the forced departure of coach Gennaro Gattuso, writes AP, and according to Sky, Gattuso has already left his post.
Several politicians, including Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, have previously called for the federation president to resign. He described the situation as “an unacceptable disgrace,” according to the Financial Times.
