Andersson says Social Democrats want to form government with Centre Party and Greens, with Left Party support

The Social Democrats want to form a government with the Green Party and the Centre Party, Magdalena Andersson announces. She sees the Left Party as a support party. Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist wants to wait for a response from the Moderates.

I want to use the coming week to work for a government consisting of the Social Democrats, the Centre Party and the Green Party, in close cooperation with the Left Party, and to implement the political direction that the Swedish people have voted for, says Andersson.

She says she held meetings with the Centre Party and the Left Party during the day.

I hope the Left Party takes time to reflect on this and on what is at stake for people in our country, says Andersson.

A flat no from the Left Party could lead the Social Democrats to look beyond the bloc boundaries.

Then I can state that only a government that includes the Social Democrats and the Moderates has the conditions to function in practice, take responsibility for Sweden and ensure that we do not have a government that is completely in the hands of the Sweden Democrats.

Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist says she first wants to see the “total package” from the Social Democrats and the Moderates on how they want to govern Sweden. She had previously asked to receive it by Friday at the latest.

“We want to see the whole picture and are therefore waiting to comment on individual parts until we have seen both total packages,” Thand Ringqvist writes on X.

Andersson is asked whether the decision reflects her belief that the Left Party is unsuitable or whether it is something the Centre Party has demanded.

I assess that this is the government most likely to take office, she says, elaborating on her argument.

The Centre Party's red lines regarding the Left Party and the Sweden Democrats are rooted in ideology, while the Left Party's demand to join the government “is about wanting to secure its influence,” she emphasizes.

And it can be achieved in ways other than by getting ministerial posts.
