The former biathlon top athlete Anders Besseberg did not get his appeal through in Norway's equivalent to the court of appeal. The 79-year-old is sentenced to three years of unconditional imprisonment, writes NTB.

The Norwegian, chairman of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) for more than 25 years, was sentenced last year to three years and one month in prison for gross corruption.

Among the evidence from the IBU's independent investigation commission were received gifts in the form of watches, hunting trips and prostitutes for "an inappropriate favoritism of Russian interests".

Anders Besseberg appealed the verdict to the lagmannsretten, Norway's equivalent to the court of appeal, but was not successful.

However, the court of appeal considers that Besseberg should be considered innocent of some individual actions mentioned in the charges. Therefore, they impose a marginally milder punishment than the district court did.

The prosecutor had requested 3.5 years in prison and a fine of approximately 700,000 kronor.

Anders Besseberg has consistently denied the crimes.
