”RSF has committed widespread sexual violence in cities and villages in Sudan to humiliate, assert control, and expel communities”, according to Amnesty.
The report contains detailed testimonies from 30 victims, including minors, and their relatives. The violent acts were committed throughout the country from the outbreak of war to October 2024.
Two women describe to Amnesty how they were held captive as sex slaves in the capital Khartum. One of them states that she was held captive for 30 days and was repeatedly raped during that time.
Several women report that RSF soldiers raped them because they were suspected of supporting the country's army, which RSF is at war with. Female healthcare workers were also raped because they failed to save the lives of injured RSF fighters.
In October, the UN also found that widespread sexual violence had occurred during the war in Sudan, where RSF was said to be responsible for "the vast majority". The paramilitary group rejected the allegations and dismissed them as propaganda.
Since the war began in April 2023, RSF has been fighting against the country's regular army. According to the UN, the violence has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with over twelve million people displaced and tens of thousands killed. In March this year, the military recaptured Khartum, but the country is still largely divided into two.
