The cuts are part of an ongoing effort to create a stronger organization with fewer layers of employees, according to a blog post from Vice President Beth Galetti.
The purpose is to reduce bureaucracy in the organization and move resources to what matters most to Amazon's customers, according to Galetti.
On Monday, the news agency Reuters reported that the impending layoffs could affect 30,000 employees, citing sources.
Amazon had a total of 1.55 million employees at the mid-year point and will present its quarterly report for the third quarter on Thursday.
