Algerian Director Mohammed Lakhdar Hamina Dies at 95

The Algerian director Mohammed Lakhdar Hamina is dead. He passed away on Friday, 95 years old.

In 1975, he became the first Arab and African director to win the prestigious Golden Palm at the film festival in Cannes, which he did with "The Blazing Years" – a drama about Algeria's struggle for independence.

Hamina competed four times at the festival on the French Riviera. In 1967, he won the prize for best debut film with "Winds from Aurès".
