Australia will conduct a royal commission after the terrorist attack on Bondi Beach, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced.

Ever since the attack in December, when 15 people were shot dead during a Jewish celebration on Sydney's waterfront, relatives of the victims have called for a national, independent inquiry into anti-Semitism in Australia.

The Prime Minister had resisted, but on Thursday an upcoming royal commission was announced.

"We have listened," he said, according to ABC News.

I have repeatedly said that our government's priority is to promote unity and social cohesion. And this is what Australia needs to heal.

What will be investigated is determined by the person leading the investigation, but according to Albanese, it could include the sequence of events leading up to the attack, security at Bondi Beach, and even the government's handling of anti-Semitism in the country.

A royal commission is the most comprehensive type of judicial inquiry in Australia.
