The plane crash occurred "as a result of physical and technical external influence", writes CNN, citing Azerbaijan's state news agency Azertac.
What this means in concrete terms is not described further.
On Friday, the company also announced that they are stopping flights to seven Russian cities. The measure is being introduced since one of the company's planes crashed in western Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
Not allowed to land
According to sources within the Azerbaijani government and the USA, a Russian air defense missile may have been behind the plane crash in Kazakhstan on Christmas Day.
The shooting down may have occurred in connection with Russia's attempt to shoot down Ukrainian drones over the city of Grozny.
On Friday, the head of Russia's aviation authority, Dmitri Jadrov, confirmed that Ukrainian drones attacked the city at the time when the plane was trying to land. Despite the pilots' distress calls, the plane was not allowed to land and was forced to fly over the Caspian Sea to Aktau in Kazakhstan.
A decision that Russia claims the captain took voluntarily.
Nearly 40 dead
About three kilometers from the airport in the Kazakh coastal city of Aktau, the plane crashed after the pilots lost control of it. At least 38 people, including the pilots, have been confirmed dead.
The two black boxes found at the site will take about two weeks to read, according to Kazakh state media.
Ukraine says Russia should be held responsible for the deadly crash. Something that Azerbaijani parliamentarian Rasim Musabekov also wants to see, since the plane was damaged over Grozny but not allowed to land.
"According to all rules in aviation, they (Russia) should have allowed this and organized it."
Instead, the plane was not allowed to land at nearby Russian airports either, but was sent "far away" with "GPS turned off", says Musabekov.
The purpose may have been for the plane to crash into the sea to "cover up a crime", he suggests.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said on Thursday that the country does not want to comment on the allegations of Russia's responsibility until an investigation has been conducted.
