The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) compiles data on disciplinary cases at universities and colleges every year. After a three-year downward trend, the number of suspensions and warnings increased by three percent between 2024 and 2025, to 2,328 students.
For the first time, cases involving unauthorized use of AI tools are the most common form of cheating, rising from 237 students in 2024 to 851 students in 2025. Previously, plagiarism was the largest category of disciplinary cases.
Less than one percent of all students are caught cheating.
In addition to various forms of cheating, disciplinary matters can also involve disruptive behavior or harassment.
