Democrats and Republicans have reached a preliminary agreement that means a new government shutdown can be avoided, AP reports.

The deal, which Congress has not yet voted on, means that funding for the Department of Homeland Security is separated from the rest of the federal budget.

Democrats have previously demanded changes to ICE to allow federal funding to pass; that funding expires this week. The Department of Homeland Security funding is now being temporarily extended for two weeks, during which further negotiations on ICE will take place.

President Donald Trump said he supports the deal.

Last fall, the U.S. government was shut down for just over 40 days when Democrats and Republicans in Congress failed to agree on the federal budget.
