The German director writes in an open letter that he now realizes that Kinski should have been "better protected" and not shown wearing only her underwear in a scene where her co-star, more than twice her age, lies on top of her.
"For that, I apologize unreservedly, Nastassja," he writes.
Kinski has been trying for years to get Wenders to cut the scene.
"It was my first film, he was my first director and he didn't protect me," she said in May to Süddeutsche Zeitung in an interview that led to debate in Germany.
"False Movement" from 1975 will now not be shown in any medium until the parties have found "a mutually acceptable solution," Wenders writes.
