The historic BBC World Service is being hit hard by cuts, and a new funding deal is being delayed. The current contract expires in seven weeks, warns BBC Director-General Tim Davie.

BBC World Service was previously funded by the British Foreign Office, but has been financed by the licence fee since 2014 and has had to cut its operations significantly over the past ten years.

Now, outgoing BBC director Tim Davie has said he is worried about the future of the influential World Service, at a time when the United States and other Western countries are cutting back on independent news operations and disinformation is increasingly spreading.

"I appeal to the government to support the World Service and act forcefully and urgently," Davie said, according to The Guardian.
