The 18-year-old suspected of planning a terrorist attack in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm this summer has admitted the crime, his lawyer said in the district court.

– NN admits to all of these charges, says lawyer Johan Åkermark at Stockholm District Court.

The crimes now recognized are preparation for a terrorist crime, preparation for a felony offense against the Flammable and Explosives Act, and training for terrorism, a felony offense.

The latter two crimes concern that he received instructions on how to build and use explosives, and that he also began building bombs for terrorist purposes.

Next to Åkermark sits the 18-year-old himself, with long black hair and dressed in a green shirt and green pants from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. Earlier in the investigation, he has denied having planned a terrorist act.

Attack on the cultural festival

The preparations for the terrorist crime that he now admits to, according to the indictment, concern a plan to carry out a terrorist act against the Culture Festival this summer, which took place at several locations in central Stockholm in August. The attack was to be carried out with weapons or explosives, the prosecutor says.

The purpose of the act was to instill serious fear in the name of the Islamic State among a population or part of the population in Sweden that does not share IS ideology, says prosecutor Carl Mellberg in court.

Preparations are expected to have taken place between August 2024 and February 2025.

Shortly after the 18-year-old's confession was made in court on Tuesday, the court again decided to hold the hearing behind closed doors and the rest of today's hearing will not be open to the public.

TT has been in contact with the 18-year-old's lawyer Johan Åkermark, who currently does not want to make any further comments.

Undercover police officer

A large part of the prosecution's evidence is based on information that the investigation obtained through a police officer working undercover, with whom the 18-year-old discussed his plans.

Earlier in the trial, the man admitted to participating in a terrorist organization, one of the charges. More details about the admission than that are not public because most of the hearing is being held behind closed doors, but according to the indictment, he has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State.

A 17-year-old boy is also charged in the case, suspected of having planned to murder a man in Eppstein, Germany, in August last year together with the 18-year-old. The 18-year-old has denied that crime earlier in the trial.

The 18-year-old terrorist accused has been in custody since his arrest on February 11. A minor mental health examination has shown that the man may suffer from a serious mental disorder.
