Åberg played together with world number one Scottie Scheffler, and the duo struggled out in the strong wind and thick rough.
Åberg started the best of the two, and made birdie on both the third and fourth holes after a bogey on the second, but then the birdie train stopped.
When the Swede finished, he did so on par for the course, 72 strokes, after a concluding birdie.
But it was not just Åberg, who won the major tournament Genesis Invitational just a few weeks ago, who had it tough.
Despite the seemingly pale round, the Swede lies relatively high up on the leaderboard, in a tie for 15th place. After the round's conclusion, only 18 of the 72 players had gone around on par or under par.
American Wyndham Clark leads after the first round with five under par.
