Åberg lost several kilos due to stomach flu: "Tough"

Ludvig Åberg took a solid revenge in the second round at the classic Torrey Pines with six strokes under par. The Swedish golf star has bounced back after being knocked out by a stomach flu two weeks ago. It was tough for a while, says Åberg.

World sexan Ludvig Åberg scored an eagle, five birdies and only one bogey in the second round in San Diego. The 66 strokes sent him up 20 places in the results list to a shared fifth place before round three.

The 25-year-old star is now a total of four strokes behind American Davis Thompson, who leads the competition.

Åberg had a tougher time yesterday, when he went through the first round two strokes over par. It's the first time Åberg has competed again since he withdrew from a competition on January 31 at Pebble Beach due to stomach flu.

It was nice to get a week off last week and just eat as much as I could to get back to training, says Åberg after the second round, according to the tour's website.

It was just at Torrey Pines last week that Åberg got stomach flu. At Pebble Beach, he then became feverish and got a cold. In two days, he lost around three and a half kilos, he reveals now.

I'm still trying to gain weight. I'm not quite where I started, says Åberg and adds that he's on his way there.

This weekend's competition at Torrey Pines was originally supposed to be decided in Pacific Palisades, but was moved to San Diego due to the fires in Los Angeles.

The competition is one of the tour's so-called signature competitions. In most of them, all 72 players in the starting field get to play all four rounds. But in this weekend's competition at Torrey Pines, the qualifying limit was drawn at four over par.

Corrected: In an earlier version of this text, incorrect information was provided about how many players get to continue. The correct information is that the qualifying limit was drawn at four over par.
