Last week, it became clear that the program at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will be expanded with a mixed competition in golf – that is, a male and a female player forming a team.
From the start, the Olympic Games are a different kind of competition, so I liked the news that we will form teams with one of the girls, says Åberg at a press conference ahead of this week's PGA tour event in South Carolina.
Olympic Debut Last Year
In Paris last year, Åberg made her Olympic debut. Alex Norén was the other Swedish male player, and on the women's side, Sweden was represented by Linn Grant and Maja Stark.
Åberg hopes to play in LA in about three years, but cannot mention any favorite to form a team with.
All the girls are fantastic people. There are also a couple of college players now that you have to keep an eye on, says Åberg, who finished seventh in this year's first major tournament, the US Masters, on Sunday.
Now, the International Golf Federation has also released the details of the new mixed competition. Participating nations can only enter one team, and the two players selected must be qualified for the individual tournaments.
Two Rounds
The competition will be decided over a total of two rounds. During the first 18 holes, foursome (players take alternate shots) will be played, and during the final round, best ball (the team chooses its best result on each hole) will be played.
The mixed competition will be decided after the men's individual tournament, but before the women's tournament. The individual play will, as before, be decided over four rounds.
