An election for the Palestinian Authority’s Legislative Council was scheduled for November 28 this year but has been postponed.
A presidential election was expected to be called in the spring, but it will take place somewhat later.
Both elections will be held on September 11, 2027, the Palestinian Authority’s presidential office announced, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. President Abbas is reported to have issued a decree on the matter, which means Palestinians will be able to choose a successor to the 90-year-old president.
The last elections were held in 2006 and ended in a brief armed conflict between the Fatah party and the Islamist Hamas. Since then, Fatah, under President Abbas, has led the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank, while Hamas has held power in Gaza.
