The announcement was made by Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall in a speech to the European Parliament's Environment Committee on Monday evening.
"We have come to the conclusion not to open up REACH at this point, when we need certainty and predictability. But we are looking at ways to simplify things," Roswall said.
Danish MEP Per Clausen from the left-wing Unity Party is highly critical, calling it "a betrayal of EU citizens and the environment" in a statement.
"It stinks, honestly," Clausen writes.
A revision of the REACH chemicals law, which is one of the EU's most comprehensive pieces of legislation, was promised back in 2020 as part of the EU's Green Deal.
