A collapsed gold mine in eastern Mali has claimed 42 lives, according to the country's authorities. Many more are said to have been injured.
The accident occurred at the village of Dabia on Saturday. A representative of the local government states that it was caused by a landslide "at a facility operated by Chinese citizens".
The country's authorities will now investigate whether the mine is operated legally or not.
The accident is the second deadly incident in the country's gold mines in a short time. At the end of January, a gold mine in southern Mali collapsed, resulting in at least ten deaths and many missing, most of them women.
In January last year, more than 70 people died when an illegal gold mine collapsed near the capital Bamako.
Mali is one of the world's poorest countries – and at the same time one of Africa's largest gold producers.
