Just over a month has passed since the ceasefire between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas came into effect, but the medical needs in the Gaza Strip remain enormous, warns WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The organization is on site in Gaza to rebuild destroyed healthcare systems and evacuate patients who need life-saving care.
"I thank the 30 countries that have opened their doors to receive patients and urge others to join us - more than 16,500 patients, including almost 4,000 children, are awaiting evacuation to receive emergency care outside Gaza," the WHO director wrote on X.
He also reiterates the demand that all evacuation routes to the West Bank be opened.
Less than a month ago, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that there is an acute shortage of vital medicines, equipment and medical personnel. In addition, there are no fully functioning hospitals in the area – only 14 of Gaza's 36 hospitals were functioning at all at the time.
