20-year-old's success: Swedish record on 200 meters

Erik Erlandsson struck with a super race at an athletics gala in Växjö. The 20-year-old set a new Swedish record on the 200 meters indoors, and thereby erased Johan Wissman's nearly 21-year-old record. "I thought I would be able to run a time close to the Swedish record, but not that fast", says Erlandsson.

Erik Erlandsson introduced himself to the Swedish audience last summer when he first came fourth at the European Championship, and then advanced to the Olympic Games semifinal. But now, the merely 20-year-old sprinter has also written himself into the record books.

During an athletics gala in Växjö, Erlandsson made a career-best performance and ran 200 meters indoors in a new Swedish record time with a 22-hundredth margin. The new record stands at 20.43.

"Yes, that was okay", says Erik Erlandsson, laughing, to the Swedish Athletics Federation, and continues:

"I thought I could run a time close to the Swedish record, but not that fast. I've felt that I've been running fast lately, but it's hard to know how fast until you run a race."

The previous record, 20.65, belonging to Johan Wissman, was almost 21 years old and was set on February 28, 2004.
