This concerns children and young people who were patients at Mälar Hospital in Eskilstuna between 2019 and 2025. Of around 800 cases that have been re-examined, 20 children who were declared healthy have been called in for a new assessment.
The shortcomings were discovered in 2025 after the previously employed pediatric cardiologist left his post. They involved ambiguities in documentation and patient management.
We take this very seriously, it concerns children and cardiac care, says Björn Persson, head of the surgery division at Mälar Hospital.
The clinic first found five cases where deficiencies were identified after they were assessed by another pediatric cardiologist. It then went on to review all cases in which the doctor had been involved.
The doctor, who was employed on an hourly basis, was reported by the region to the Inspectorate for Health and Social Care (Ivo) in connection with the review.
According to Björn Persson, this includes assessments of heart function that may have been made incorrectly.
These may be cases that require surgery or changed medication, he says.
Everyone affected will be contacted by letter. Anyone who is concerned can also contact the Children and Youth Clinic.
In addition to the 20 who may have been incorrectly declared healthy, 51 of the patients who currently go to the pediatric heart clinic will be called in earlier than planned to rule out that they have also received incorrect assessments.
The region has also filed a lex Maria complaint due to the shortcomings in its own quality work that were discovered in connection with this.
