Around 1,600 tourists have been evacuated from the railway station below the citadel Machu Picchu in Peru, after a local protest escalated into clashes with police.

Around 4,500 tourists visit the ruins daily, according to Peruvian authorities, known as one of Latin America's major tourist attractions.

Most of the visitors travel approximately eleven miles by train from the city of Cuzco to the Aguas Calientes station. From there, you can walk up, but it is a steep serpentine road, so most people take the bus for the rest of the way.

On Monday, demonstrators placed objects on the train tracks to demand that local interests should weigh heavier in the bidding process for a new bus operator. 14 police officers are reported to have been injured in clashes with demonstrators.
