120 people have been injured when a demonstration in Mexico City turned violent. Up to 100 of those injured are police officers.

According to Mexican El Universal , at least 20 people have been arrested in what is reported to be a demonstration against President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Local authorities said the demonstration was planned online by people in Generation Z, but AFP reported that the participants were of various ages. The protesters say the government is doing too little to curb the gang violence that is taking place in the country.

This demonstration went on peacefully for a few hours, until some masked people began to behave violently, says the city's security chief at a press conference.

120 injured have been reported, of whom around 100 are police officers. However, most have not required hospital treatment.

Many of the protesters carried banners and hats in support of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán state, who was shot dead during a public event two weeks ago. Manzo had previously called on the government to do more to combat violent crime.

Sheinbaum has dismissed the demonstration as "non-genuine" and believes it is a way for foreign actors to harm the government.
