About 1.2 million people have been evacuated in the Philippines as powerful Typhoon Fung-Wong approaches the country. So far, two people have died in the storm's wake.

One of them drowned in floods in the eastern province of Catanduanes. The second death was recorded in the town of Catbalogan in Samar province, where a woman died after being hit by debris.

Fung-Wong was upgraded during the night to Sunday to a so-called super typhoon.

The waves began to roar around 7 a.m. When the waves hit the seawall, it felt like the ground was shaking, Edson Casarino in the town of Virac in Catanduanes told AFP.

Now the rain is pouring down and I can hear the wind howling.

The storm is coming in from the east and residents in coastal areas have been asked to move to higher ground. Several areas have been flooded. Most of the country is expected to be affected by the typhoon and a large number of schools will be closed on Monday, reports the BBC .

Fung-Wong hits shortly after Typhoon Kalmaegi, whose advance in the Philippines earlier this week caused over 220 deaths.
