Pilane is closed now: its seasonal opening runs from May to September. The exhibition area is on Tjörn, just north of Gothenburg, with sculptures set among hills, grazing sheep and a millennia-old burial ground. The exhibition has been held each summer since 2007, with permanent sculptures and temporary shows by international artists. Jaume Plensa’s 14-metre-high white sculpture of a woman’s head, Anna, has stood on a hilltop since 2016.
Visitors walk between artworks on well-trodden paths, climb hilltops and look out over the sea and archipelago islands. The ground is largely untouched and parts are hilly. Reaching some hilltop works requires good mobility, though several sculptures can be seen from the central area.
The usual opening period is May to September; check pilane.org for current opening hours. Visitors may bring a picnic, but should eat away from the sculptures. Smoking, open fires and barbecuing are not permitted. Dogs must be kept on leads. Do not pick flowers, feed the animals or climb on or damage the sculptures. Adults are responsible for children’s safety, and visitors may be held financially responsible for damage.
