Tio Toppar Tavelsjö is a guide to ten mountains in Tavelsjöbygden, outside Umeå. Each has a marked trail from its foot to the summit. The one-way walks range from 0.5 to 2.1 kilometres, with climbs of 42 to 165 metres. Completing all ten adds up to more than 1,000 metres of ascent. The mountains include Tavelsjöberget, 282 metres high, and Krogberget, 156 metres. The website lists a map for each summit, and the trails can also be viewed on Naturkartan or in its app.
The website says the winter peaks are open and that parking areas are ploughed in winter. It does not give an overall visit time, so plan around the walks you choose. The ten climbs vary in length and ascent, and tackling all of them means more than 1,000 metres of climbing.
The area’s bare rock is linked to the land’s rise after the inland ice melted about 10,200 years ago. The website says the sea once reached 260 metres above today’s sea level. Waves stripped moraine from the higher ground, leaving exposed rock, while finer soils settled lower down. Those lower areas are now farmland.
