Museum Torfrid Olsson presents the work of Torfrid Olsson (1913–2003), who lived and worked on his family farm in Bygdeträsk, Västerbotten. The museum has studios and exhibitions reflecting his work, shown in a personal, small-scale setting. During the season, the collection may also include guest exhibitions and a café. The museum welcomes individual visitors and groups.
Olsson is described as one of Sweden’s leading symbolist and surrealist artists. He worked in different techniques, making imaginative art rooted in nature, often with symbols of fertility or the destruction of evil. Tools and other implements appear in his works. Olsson said he got his best ideas “while the horse rested”. His work is held by institutions including Moderna Museet and the Nationalmuseum, and appears in public artworks. A book about his life and art, In Praise of Fertility, was published in 2013.
Beside the museum stands a memorial stone, erected on 13 July 2024. It commemorates a drowning accident on Lake Stora Bygdeträsket in 1812, in which nine men died and at least 26 children were left without fathers.
