Bure Arkiv is in Bureå, about 20 kilometres south of Skellefteå. The museum is in the former company office, built in 1952 to a design by Birger Dahlberg. Much of its 1950s furniture and interior remains, and visitors can walk through most of the rooms.
The main exhibition tells the story of Bureå’s sawmill and pulp industries, from the sawmill’s beginnings in the 1700s to the closure of the last industrial operation in 1992. A separate exhibition, opened in 2017, covers Bure Aktiebolag’s sawmills over time with a model and photographs. There is also an exhibition of historic office machines. The displays cover the industries’ effects on work and community life in the area.
Bure Sågverksintressenter was formed in 1796 and became Bure Aktiebolag in 1873. The company began operating a pulp mill in 1928. Its sawmill closed in 1972, and its pulp mill closed about 20 years later. The company archive covers 1796 to 1992 and includes letters, accounts, minutes, photographs, maps and drawings. It is available to amateur and professional researchers by appointment.
During the museum’s summer opening, a lecture on a local-history topic is held each Sunday at 13:00. The building’s lower floor is accessible to wheelchair users. The website does not state an admission price or how long a visit takes.
