Vikingaleden is a 180-kilometre hiking trail from Grisslehamn to Älvkarleby in Uppland. It links the Roslagsleden and St Olav Waterway trails at Grisslehamn with Upplandsleden at Älvkarleby. From there, the pilgrimage continues on Helgonaleden toward Trondheim. The wider route runs about 1,200 kilometres from Turku in Finland to Trondheim in Norway, crossing the Åland archipelago before reaching Sweden.
The trail is divided into 12 stages and marked in burgundy with the St Olav symbol. Walkers pass lakes and forests, pastures with stone farms, working rural areas and old villages. The route also goes by milestones and Walloon ironworks, and through ancient places along paths and roads that may have been used during the Viking Age. The countryside includes rare fauna and flora.
You can hike the route, and stages one to six are also suitable for cycling. Accommodation options along the trail include campsites, cottages, bed-and-breakfasts and multi-star hotels. The route is described as a series of 12 stages, rather than as a visit with a set duration.
