The name Beck comes from an explanation of Tjärhovsgatan’s past on the café’s website. It says the street was once Södermalm’s main road and ran down to the water where the Finland ferries are now. The street name, it says, comes from a tar factory. Beck is the residue left after tar is boiled; the café suggests that a small ristretto might therefore be called a Beck. Johan, who runs the café, says he values the conversations that happen there between regulars and newcomers.
