Ishult Courthouse, called Ishults Tingshus in Swedish, is now a museum in a courthouse the venue describes as one of Småland’s best-preserved. The first court session was held here in 1730; judges and a jury last met in the building in 1935. The venue says justice was administered here for more than 200 years.

The courthouse and its prison are architectural monuments. The museum tells visitors about past living conditions, and the venue describes the building as a record of the difficult conditions people once faced. It is owned and cared for by Tunaläns Hembygdsförbund, an umbrella for heritage societies in Kristdala, Tuna, Misterhult and Figeholm.

The court’s history also includes executions: according to Visit Sweden, people sentenced to death were executed at gallows hill in Krokstorp, a few kilometres from the courthouse. The venue’s website gives no opening hours, admission price or suggested visit length, so it does not establish whether the museum is open this week, what a visit costs or how long to allow.
