Kayakomat Färjenäs is an unmanned kayak-rental station on Hisingen. From here, you can paddle towards the harbour entrance, follow routes linked to Gothenburg’s history, or head for Nya Älvsborg fortress, about four kilometres away. Färjenäs lies in the area where Gothenburg first took shape. [1]

Book online. Before your start time, Kayakomat sends a personal access code by text message and email. Use it at the station to unlock the kayak and equipment. The rental includes a buoyancy aid, paddle and spray deck. When your rental period ends, return the kayak and equipment, clean them and lock them back into place. A kayak trolley is available to move the kayak between the station and the water. [1]

Route suggestions appear on a map attached to the kayak and on Kayakomat’s social media channels. One route leads to Nya Älvsborg, a fortress built in the 17th century to defend Gothenburg against attacks from the sea. It remained one of the city’s important defensive sites for several centuries. Wind, waves and boat traffic can affect conditions on these routes. Visit Sweden says they are best suited to experienced kayakers who are confident on more exposed water. [1]
