The collection has around 70,000 works dating from the 15th century to the present, with a particular emphasis on Nordic artists. It includes works by Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Edvard Munch and P.S. Krøyer, as well as Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. The Fürstenberg Gallery displays part of a collection built by Pontus and Göthilda Fürstenberg in the late 19th century, including P.S. Krøyer’s Hip, Hip, Hurrah! and Richard Bergh’s Nordisk sommarkväll.

The museum is at Götaplatsen, where the city’s cultural institutions include the Gothenburg City Theatre, Gothenburg Concert Hall and the Hasselblad Center. Carl Milles’ statue of Poseidon stands at the centre of the square.

The museum’s calendar lists activities from 2 November onwards. On Monday 2 November, it lists an audio-described tour, “Portraits’ Stories”, and “Meetings with Memories: Portraits”. A baby tour called “What Is Art?” is listed for Tuesday 3 November, and a special tour of landscapes in the collection for Wednesday 4 November. Later listings include “Body. Ideal, Gaze, Freedom” and a studio activity, “Shape a Body!”. The calendar marks a croquis session on 10 November as fully booked.
