Klovbacken Nature Reserve covers 12 hectares on a south-facing forest slope, 9 kilometres north of Bergsjö and 8 kilometres west of Gnarp. The forest has spruce alongside birch and aspen, and trees are allowed to grow old and die naturally. A stream runs through the reserve. Visitors can walk freely in the forest, but there are no paths.
The reserve is best experienced in spring, when wood anemones and hepatica bloom. In autumn, chanterelles grow in the forest. The rare grass sweetgrass grows along the stream; great mannagrass and slender mannagrass are also found there. Other plants include baneberry and herb-paris. Hepatica indicates limestone in the soil.
Old aspens have woodpecker holes, and the older forest supports birdlife. Species found in the reserve include the three-toed woodpecker, grey-headed woodpecker and Ural owl. Old trees and dead wood provide conditions for insects and, in turn, many birds. Expect to make your way through the forest without marked paths.
