Buildings set on fire in New Caledonia
Several buildings, including a police station and a town hall, were set on fire in New Caledonia on Sunday night local time as the French territory was once again hit by unrest. According to a press release from the High Commissioner, who represents the French state in the archipelago, the unrest was reported on the main island and two smaller adjacent islands.
Separatists arrested, flown to France
Seven separatists from New Caledonia have been flown 1,700 miles from the island group in the Pacific Ocean to the French mainland, where they will be held in custody awaiting trial. One of those detained is Christian Tein, leader of the independence group CCAT and one of the leading activists in the drive for independence for the island group.
