Sundsvall Municipality, attempted phone fraud.

An older person contacts the police and reports an attempted scam via text message. The text message claimed that the older person had an unpaid invoice with a phone company that the person is not a customer of.

The text message also included a phone number, which the person called. During the phone call, the scammer claimed that the person would be connected to their bank. The person claiming to be from the bank tried to persuade the person to log in with BankID, but instead of doing so, the person called the police.

A report of attempted fraud has been filed.

How to protect yourself against phone fraud:

  1. Hang up:

If someone calls you and you feel unsure, end the call. This applies whether the person says they are a relative or someone from your bank, a company or a government agency.

Prepare something you can say to end the call quickly, or hang up immediately. You do not need to be polite.

  2. Do not log in:

Never identify yourself using BankID and never give out codes from your bank security token or for your payment card if someone asks for them.

Reputable companies, organisations and government agencies never contact you and ask you to log in or give out personal information in this way.

  3. Do not trust the caller
The scammer may try to stress you by saying that you are about to lose money or that something has happened to a relative.

Do not trust the caller even if they seem credible and have personal information about you.

If you suspect that you have been targeted by phone fraud, first and foremost contact your bank to possibly stop further fraud. After that, it is important to file a police report. There are two ways to file a police report:

  • call the police on 114 14
  • visit a police station

Call 112 if the crime is happening now, or if the police are needed at the scene quickly.
