The police have been alerted that an avalanche has occurred in Vassitjåkko, south of Riksgränsen in Kiruna municipality.

There is information that people may have been affected by the avalanche.

The police's on-duty commander has made a decision to initiate a mountain rescue operation in accordance with the LSO, the Act on Protection against Accidents. Several resources are on their way to the location. This includes mountain rescuers with an operations leader and a dog. Several helicopters are also joining the operation.

Update 13:42: New information has been received that the people who are said to have been swept up in the avalanche have now been found. According to available information, it is about five people. The extent of the damage is unknown.

The rescue operation is continuing to ensure that no one else is swept up in the avalanche. There is nothing to indicate that anyone else is missing.
