An application for fraud has been drawn up after an elderly man in Nyköping was deceived out of money by an unknown scammer. Initially, the man received an SMS with information that he was liable for a certain amount of money. In the SMS, it was also stated that the man should call a specified number. During the phone call, the victim was then deprived of over 10,000 kronor.

Fraud targeting mainly older people is a common problem. It involves both fraud committed via the phone, but also so-called physical vishing where perpetrators appear in person at home. 

The police want to urge caution when it comes to contacts with people you do not know. Below are tips on how you can protect yourself.

If someone calls and you do not know the person, hang up the phone! Dare to be unpleasant. 

Do not let anyone in your home.

If you receive a call from someone who claims to be from a bank or other company that wants to help you with various types of services, or orders that you know you have not made: hang up and call the police. 

Do not call any phone numbers that you are urged to do via SMS. For example, someone may claim that you have purchased goods or services and that you should call a number if this is not the case. Do not do it! Instead, call the company's central switchboard at the number you yourself look up, and check with them if the information is correct. 

In some cases, the scammers claim to be from authorities, such as the police, and claim that they are on site to pick up valuables to protect against break-ins. This is fraud! The police will never come to your home and pick up your valuables.
