January 18, 20:07, Elderly crime, Halland County

Published: 18 January 2025

We want to bring to the public's attention that we are currently handling a larger number of fraud offenses in the region, targeted at older people.

The victims are mainly single women, many of whom are in their 90s. The modus operandi is similar, but at the same time varying: The scammer contacts via phone and poses as someone - it can be a crafts firm, an electronics chain, home care, a bank, or an authority. The purpose may be to prepare access to the elderly person's home, or to persuade him or her to hand over valuable items to a person who will visit the victim's home. The events that the police have become aware of, concern both attempted fraud and completed scams.

If you are contacted by someone who claims that something has happened that requires you to hand over valuable items or log in to your bank: Hang up the phone and contact the police.

Do you have elderly relatives? Inform them about the scammers' methods, and encourage them to be vigilant.

Have you been a victim of a scam? Don't hesitate to contact the police. The information you provide can be crucial.

More information on how you can protect yourself against scams can be found on the police's website (see link below).
