Under the day, the police have gained knowledge of a fraud attempt and a theft attempt in Ulricehamn's municipality. Both with similar methods.
The police received a call at 13:30 from a 95-year-old woman who had been visited by a man who claimed to be checking a water leak. Inside the home, he asked if there were any valuable items in the house. When the woman asked for identification, the man left. A police patrol has been on the scene and heard the victim. The incident is being investigated as an attempted fraud.
At 15:34, another call was received, also from a 95-year-old woman. The victim reported that she had let a man into her home, again claiming to be checking a water leak. After the man left, the woman saw that objects had been moved in the home. A report of attempted theft is being filed.
A completed crime with the same modus occurred in Stenungsunds municipality yesterday. A 95-year-old woman was robbed of jewelry and cash. There is currently no suspect in either case.
How to protect yourself from crime:
- Do not let unknown persons into your home until you have been able to verify their identity. Ask for identification and try to check it. Often, there are phone numbers for verification.
- Never leave out credit cards, codes, or valuable items for someone who claims to want to pick them up. There are no banks or serious companies that operate in this way.
- If you let an unknown person in, make sure no one else sneaks in at the same time.
- Keep your front door locked when you're at home, so that no one can enter without you noticing.
- Do not keep large sums of money at home.
- Be cautious with bank cards, PIN codes, and even door codes. Do not store the code in the same place as the card.
- Do not store valuable items in plain sight, for example, in the hallway. Consider locking them away. Then, a temporary visitor cannot take anything.
- Take photos of your valuable items (do not let a stranger do it) to ensure you can get compensation if they are stolen.
- If you are a victim - report to the police and seek support from people close to you.
- If you have elderly relatives - talk to them and tell them how they can protect themselves from crime.
